to senate republicans particularly john mccain sent with their treatment of hague snell. >> i think actually it was a long memory from people who had to work with chuck hagel over the years, alex. i think a lot of people who didn't say then senator hagel and sometimes his treatment of witnesses at the stand, people that had to go before him and be questioned by chuck hagel were not surprised by this kind of grilling. also, remember chuck hagel spent a lot of time telling people they were wrong or they were immoral in some of the decisions that they made. and this was some payback for him for that type of stance towards others in both colleagues and people who had to testify before his committees. >> yeah. and i mean, there are those who -- john mccain, shall we say, he's probably going to be upset that chuck hagel was there supporting president obama when they were running against one another. you get that. but this is a pretty serious job, tony. this is defense secretary. i mean, do you think that kind of politics, those maybe personal issues should be brought up under these circumstances?

john mccain and others giving them more information. they had hoped by sending this yesterday or the day before, that they could change minds and make the senators vote yes to proceed to the vote even if they wanted to reject hagel's nomination. it wasn't. it seems like they are unhappy with this pick, they wanted the president to make a different pick, and they wanted to be -- host: we did see four republicans cross over and vote with democrats and one voting present and not voting to move forward or not. why did they go that way and who were they? guest: senator hatch was one. either you vote yes or you vote no. there was talk that he doesn't believe in the filibuster so he did not want to vote no. i think you should probably vote yes. but republican leadership was actively against this vote so i guess that would be the reason. of the people who voted to not block it one of them was senator collins who is the more moderate republican from the northeast. also the senator from nebraska which is chuck hagel's home state. there was another person who voted to proceed but democra

it was personal. john mccain was the author of the surge of troops to iraq at the end of the administration, pushed it hard, took a lot of heat, including from the right. he takes it personal when chuck hagel calls it the bigst debacle since vietnam. and senator hagel dodging the question on whether he agreed with the same statement. hag mccain was getting testy and hagel was dodging. it was one of the key military decisions in the past ten years, and if senator hagel is the top military adviser to the president, they want to explore his thinking on that. and politics, trying to portray senator hagel as anti israel plays well to some interest groups, and that's much more politics. >> to pull from a football term given the weekend, it seems like he was fumbling around. was he not as well prepared as he ought to have been? >> no doubt, senators walked out of the hearing shaking their head, from both sides, democrats and republicans were very surprised how poorly prepared senator hagel appeared to be. for expected -- like senator mccain's questions about the surge. that's just a fundamental qu

much dignity to deliver. john mccain probably lost his voice this week and ford is dead so that leaves it to mitt romney. >> i want to get to four of the things on the top ten list. romney finally figured out it was time to talk about benghazi. fellow republicans kept the story alive as it should. you're hitting romney on this one. you can't let it go. >> no. my show airs at night around the country and we would do live mystery live theater on the presidential debates and sit here and watch questions of benghazi come up and romney never addressed it. he punts every single time and if that's going to be the case then i guess, you know, for we conservatives, why should we want him to win more than he does? very frustrating. >> number three, jealous of the positive press karl rove is getting. i want to get to number two. you say romney wants to make the case why self-deporting amnesty is our sure-fire way of securing more of the hispanic vote. sounds like you're trying to get him to explain why the party is abandoned by the hispanic voters. >> it's my personal favorite. he always puts the

an important vote of confidence when john mccain said he was leaning towards confirmation. >>> that carnival cruise ship that's stranded in the gulf of mexico is being pulled to mobile, alabama instead of mexico. it's been dead in the water since sunday when a fire knocked out its engines. it's scheduled to arrive in the u.s. on thursday. there are more than 4,200 people on that ship. passengers and loved ones say it's not a good scene on board. >> there's no lights. no water. we can't flush. some people were able to shower. no one was injured. most of us are camping out on the top deck. >> they're all crying and hysterical. they want to go home. >> abc news learned this is the third trip in which the "triumph" has suffered propulsion problems. the ship's next two voyages have been canceled and passengers will receive a full refund. >> interesting note here. apparently it's been towed to alabama to save the company millions and millions of dollars. and at this point, it's like they just don't care about the poor vacationers. they are offering them all reimbursement, though, and money if you
